“In the beginning there was nothing. And the Lord said: ‘Let there be light” and there was still nothing, but now you could see it.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Terry Pratchett

A letter in the most recent Mail and Guardian by Alan Northover is the reason for this post.

If ever there were people that irritated me senseless, it is evolutionists.  They are arrogant and condescending.  They have taken a theory and created a whole set of vested interests around it with which they justify their existence and from which they prey a living.  They always let me think of what Oscar Wilde once said, i.e. “Religions die when they are proved true. Science is the record of dead religions”.  Evolution is neither religion nor science. It is an idea supported by indications which is dependant on evolutionists’ interpretation thereof – which in turn demands humanity’s unconditional acceptance on the presumption that they do know better. The light has gone up but still they see nothing!

We live in a Global Village, so they say. It is just that some of the suburbs are worse than others. That is why people are migrating like birds in spring - looking for a place to live in peace; to make a living; to provide a better future for their children.  As soon as one lot improves their living conditions, their neighbors envy them and – come hell or high-water – they want to share in your prosperity.

I sometimes have difficulty understanding why we – as  Humanity – can not improof our living conditions generally. Why are some countries more affluent than others? More developed than others?  At some stage in history the Incas and Mayas ruled the most powerful civilizations in that part of the world. Today its the US. But why couldn’t the Incas and Mayas keep it up. They surely had what was needed.  Why will the US be tomorrow’s ‘civilization gone by’ with Americans cutting the fences and sneaking over the border, under cover of darkness and in search of a better future in Mexico?

This same strange phenomena can be found the world over. The poorest and most backward of nations on Earth today was once proud and prosperous people. In very few instances Nature had anything to do with their demise.

Whatever the answer may be, this is the reality with which we should deal: Today you are affluent and prosperous. You live in more peaceful environment with less crime and more work opportunity than I do. Either you ensure that I share the same quality of life or I’ll move over there and forcefully take some of yours for myself.

Soon the ‘poverty and backwardness virus’ I bear, will rub off on my host country and we will all become equally poor. But in Times to come  my home country will be the prosperous one and we all – you included – will move back again.

Does not this peculiar  human behavior make us all global citizens?  Should our utterly selfishness not inspire us to take better care of our neighbors lest they come over here and infect us with their poverty virus – or even worse – we be forced to migrate their way and be dependent on their hospitality?

 A journalist has taken a stance against those who say that the quality of journalism is bad. His opinion is that the problem is not with the quality of journalism but with the intellectual standard of the audience that journalists serve. The problem he has however strikes much further than the appreciation of good journalism.

It is not  just the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and the cream of local journalism that suffers at the hand of  Big Brother, the Jerry Springer Show, 7de Laan (SA) and tabloid press. It strikes at the heart of our democracy.

Democracy is in deed no longer government by the people for the people. It is a government of fools elected by a majority of fools. Voters that have no appreciation  whatsoever of economics, vote for an even bigger fool because he promises to empower the poor after his election. Well, you can only empower so many with bribes, corruption and the gravy train!

A perfect example of the point I wish to make, is the US and South Africa. The leaders and politicians these two countries have produced over the past decades could only have been voted in by a clear majority of fools. Look at the Bush assortment. Look at the US Senate!  In regard to South Africa you need not look further than the beetroot and potato queen, the not so honorable, drinking and stealing minister of Health. What a disgrace on humanity would these people be if they had to meet with an exstra-terrestial  power as our representatives.

The world has mostly discarded the decent, common kings and dictators, generally of average intellect,  in favor of  a group of parliamentarians with the intellectual capacity befitting of primary school children. I therefore propose that we introduce some kind of intellectual differentiation and that the names of all people with below average intellect be removed from the voters role and be disqualified to hold public office.

I know it would be very difficult to set forth a single test. Therefore consider the possibility that we compile a list of qualities people exhibit when of a sub-standard intellect, i.e.

All drinkers and thieves;

All persons indulging in sex with family and the daughters of close friends;

All persons that believe you can shower away  the HIV virus;

All women that miss one or more front teeth;

All persons with piercings and tattoos;

All persons with  Technicolor hairstyles;

Women with short tops, g-strings sticking out at the back and fat roles flapping out of  their jeans;

Women with pajamas on and seen in public with curlers in their hair;

Men appearing in public with a vests and greased hair shaped like a cockerel’s comb;

All persons reading (or staring at the pictures in) the tabloids which, in South Africa, would include Die Son and Huisgenoot;

All persons who are keen viewers of the Jerry Springer Show, WWF, Big Brother and 7de Laan in South Africa. This list may be extended as I remember more of these intellectual atrocities;

All persons who actually have not yet evolved (as far as their taste for music is concerned)  above the primal beating of drums, feverishly plucking of strings  and so-called vocal artists who seem to be the product of interrupted  or contaminated conception and finally

All bloggers who have not learned to use language to communicate and can not write one sentence without using the f-word.

With what’s left, we ought to be able to elect good, intelligent leaders. If we do not have enough of them to fill the cabinet, we may consider recruiting some from Japan or Cuba (from where SA gets most of its medical doctors!)

John Howard, George Bush’s Chihuahua,  has lost the election and the power he had in Australia, which makes the world just that little safer and Australia just that little bit more acceptable.

May he live long enough to stand trial, together with his accomplices,  for the role he played in the war crimes committed in Iraq.

I read the post of Vincent Maher under the title “Forget the quality of journalism, let’s talk about the audience”. In this he denies that there is anything wrong with the quality of journalism and is convinced that the fault is to be found with the audience. After three months of experience with the blogosphere I would like to agree with him. Most people are generally very shallow and out for quick and effortless gratification. They are mostly not capable of intellectual thought and only if you touch on the most basic of human instinct, pleasure and desire, will you evoke any reaction.

But I do not think that it represents a recent development. You must remember that the modern ‘establishment’ has semi-educated, dollied-up and accepted into its bosom a large percentage of people from the lower strata of human existence. These are, to a large extent, the people you’ll find reading Die Son and sitting in front of the TV enjoying Big Brother, 7de Laan, WWF and the Jerry Springer Show. You will also recognize them when they pass you in their small, suped-up cars. They all make this deafening, tribal doef-doef noise!

Some years back these people would hardly have been semi-illiterate, reading Die Keur and comic strips and listening to Springbok Radio stories.

Intellectuals have always been few and far between and due to a bankrupt education system it is just impossible to breed them as fast and in the quantities that this lower form of human life is produced.

The freedom of the press in regard to itself and its owners has been in the news more than once during the past week in South Africa.

In this regard I refer to the Deon Maas/Rapport issue which has extensively been discussed. I also refer to the post of Na’eem Jeenah under the title “Independent Newspapers censors, withdraws and censors again”.

I agree with almost everything that is written in this post. I however disagree with the following paragraph:

There are no “two equal sides” when talking about the Palestinian-Israeli issue; there is the side of the murderers, thieves, dispossessors and perpetrators of apartheid and there is the side of the oppressed, weak, dispossessed and victims of military occupation and apartheid. To insist that one cannot hear the voice of the oppressed unless one also hears the voice of the oppressor is, at best, cowardly acquiescence and, at worst, collaboration with oppression.”

I am highly critical of the Israelis when it comes to the Israel/Palestinian crisis. My views are well published in posts and comments on this blog. So, when it comes to the Palestinians I totally agree that they are dealing with a deceitful and dangerous enemy with whom they need to reconcile and reach a settlement.

I however vehemently disagree with the portrayal of the Palestinians as the ‘fairies’ in this fairy tale. They are far from it. Not only do I think that they are suffering the consequences of their own stupidity. I also believe that – although they lack the same level of resources, leadership and intellect, that they are equally murderous and responsible for the situation in the Middle-East. Should the present levels of resources of these parties be reversed, I think that we would see genocide, bloodshed and rampage of Palestinians on Israelis as never before in recent human history.

Fifty percent of the blame for the fact that Palestinians still do not have an establsihed Palestinian state, goes to the Palestinians themselves. They have squandered every opportunity they had to gain the upper hand in negotiations with Israel. But stupidity reigns. As soon as they gain the sympathy of the international community they start shooting rockets over the borders. Just as we all feel that things seem more positive, in comes the suicide bombers. But the ultimate moment of human stupidity was – in a time when Sharon evicts kicking and shouting Jews from Gaza – they go and vote for Hamas! Can you believe it?! What have they gained?: Hamas versus Fatah with Zionism worldwide laughing in their faces whilst wrenching the last bit of life out of them.

No, there are most certainly “two equal sides” to this story. By taking sides and strengthening any one of these parties in their irrational hate for each other, will not solve the problem.

Xmas and New Year are approaching and I’m already wondering what the new year has in store for us. Are the poor just going to become more poor and the rich even richer?

I think back many years ago, South Africa was still the biggest producer of gold. Every evening during the news on radio the news reader would inform its listeners what the gold price for the day was. If it went up, we would all be extremely happy. Now I can’t say why we were happy. We were all rather poor and most certainly did not own any share in a gold mine. None of our relatives worked in the mines. Neither were any of us involved in gold smuggling. Nonetheless, we were happy when the gold price went up.

Today, the riches of the world is owned by 1% of humanity. About 50% of all people are very poor. But what do they do? They rejoice when they hear how rich Bill Gates is. They are mesmerized when looking at the splendor and glamour of the Hollywood glitterati. Why? Nobody knows.

This makes me think of the man who wanted to proof that his horse could live without food. So he started by reducing the horses’ daily rations in very small portions. But just as he reached the point where the horse would receive no further feed, it died. The man was very unhappy and told everyone who wanted to listen that, if the horse did not die, he would have proven that a horse can live without food.

I don’t  know why I’m telling the story because it does not really fit. Nevertheless, I think that the gap between rich and poor has grown so wide that we, ordinary mortals, are at the point where the horse was when it perished.  But nothing will get us under. We will survive. The gold price must just rise and Bill Gates must get richer. Then we will be happy too.

It is Thanksgiving Day in the United States of America today. It is a day when relatives feast together and gives thanks to each other and to God for a year gone by. I think it is a lovely idea to set aside one day a year to reflect on all the beauty and good of life and the love of family and friends which we enjoyed and could share in. I also think it is absolutely perfect to have one day a year when we can get together with relatives and friends to share this thankfulness with.

During the past months I have been highly critical of the US and its government. However, on a day like this, I and many others around the world, do wish you a very happy and gratifying Thanksgiving in the company of those you love and care for. May the year to come, be a peaceful, happy and prosperous one in which we all share.

 After reading some incomprehensible posts (to put it mildly) and related comments in regard to the Deon Mass/Rapport saga, I decided to revisit the definition of what a ‘human’ is. Wikipedia defines a human as follows:

Humans, or human beings, are bipedal primates belonging to the mammalian species Homo sapiens (Latin: “wise man” or “knowing man”) in the family Hominidae (the great apes).[1][2] Compared to other living organisms on Earth, humans have a highly developed brain capable of abstract reasoning, language, and introspection. This mental capability, combined with an erect body carriage that frees their upper limbs for manipulating objects, has allowed humans to make far greater use of tools than any other species.

I applied this definition to what qualities these writers and commenter’s exhibited in their writings. Referring to the Wikipedia definition, the Questionnaire provided the following very interesting answers:

“Wise man”   - Negative.

“The great apes”  - Very possible.

“Highly developed brain”   - None that I could detect.

“Reasoning”   - Totally absent.

“Language”  -  Extremely underdeveloped. Only capable of a few curse words.

“Introspection”    - Not possible. Exhibits only one dimension.

“Use of tools”  - The only tools used with conviction were insult and curse. The rest still need to develop.

From this I can come to no other conclusion than the posts and comments were not written by humans but by some animal like creatures posing as such.  The public however need not be afraid. They are quite harmless. They just make these ugly, incomprehensible sounds ..!
