I followed the story of Gillian Gibbons, an English teacher teaching at a school in Khartoum, Sudan, who was arrested and prosecuted for insulting Islam – well, Mohammad, a prophet, to be precise. Her crime was allowing a boy in her class, named Mohammad, naming his teddy bear Mohammad. For this she was convicted and sentenced to something like 15 days imprisonment.
Moslems in Sudan were however very outraged by this light sentence – presumably feeling that the punishment does not fit the crime. So, protesters rallied in the streets today, demanding that she be executed. Shot by a firing squad for naming a teddy bear Mohammad?!
This story originates from a country where hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and millions have been displaced. The one moment they murder and the next moment they get uptight about a teddy bear?! I wondered why the death penalty. Why not rather ajiyad against America for coming up with the teddy bear!
This story follows shortly on the heals of the ‘illegal mingling’ case. A young girl meets with a man with whom se is not married. She (as well as he) gets raped by 7 other – mind you - god-fearing Muslims. She makes the mistake to protest her rape in this Saudi Arabian, Muslim community with its morals and principles. So, what do they – these Muslim judges? They sentence her to 200 lashes and some jail sentence!
This story reminds me of a story a young man told his friend. He said he was driving along a the highway when, on the side of the road, he saw 7 big, strong men hitting and kicking an old lady. So, he tells his friend “I applied my breaks and screeched to a stand still. “I jumped out of my car and ran towards them with a big spanner in my hand that I got hold of.” “Yes” says his friend “What happened then? ” “O”, tells the man “You must have seen it. We then really beat the living shit out of that old woman!”.
