South African citizens have endured more than can be expected of them. We can no longer idly stand by and see how people are killed, raped and robbed by gangs of criminals while nobody is doing anything about it. Numerous appeals to the government, of who numerous officials are of dubious character, have fallen on deaf ears. At best the responses were aggressive and patronizing.

This forces the South African public to take matters in their own hands. It would however be counter productive to undermine the rule of law in such a decision. Much better options however exist which can be employed to ensure that the persons and the relevant institutions entrusted with law and order, do their jobs and do it effectively.

We have had a trial run with the Rapport/ Deon Maas story during which aggrieved persons succeeded with a SMS campaign in forcing one of the biggest news papers in
South Africa to change course. If our safety and security are at stake, how much more will we not be capable of forcing government action to protect the public?!

The proposed strategy is that we identify specific influential companies – one after another - who are dependent on our public support. We demand from them to show solidarity with the South African public and exert whatever pressure they can on the government to implement drastic counter crime measures. This may include demands like

  • The re-introduction of the death penalty for murder;
  • The deployment of the army in security operations;
  • The termination of the Commissioner of Police’s services and the appointment of a credible and qualified person;
  • The establishment of special courts to ensure the immediate prosecution and trial of all serious criminals and
  • Legislation prohibiting the release of dangerous criminals into society before the finalization of their trials.

It is us who are keeping these people in business. If they are unwilling to help us under these dire circumstances, why would we support them?

Take a company like McDonalds for instance. They are making money while we are being killed. They need us to buy their hamburgers but we need them to exercise their influence to get real, government action. Let’s tell them “We want to see and hear what you are doing to stop the killing. We want to read it in the news papers and we want to see your representative making a statement on television. We are not going to do business with any company which is not actively trying to stop the killing of thousands of innocent people in this country. We, now more than ever, need each other.”

After reading this post, please write to them. Should no response be forthcoming in a day or two, consider sending your relatives and friends a SMS with the message “McDonalds are doing nothing to stop crime in this
South Africa. Please do not support them”.

As soon as they respond positively and constructively, go and buy double what you would have!

The time has come for action and we ask our international readers to support us.
