The US is evaluating and considering what they have available in the form of leadership to elect as president. Simultaneously South Africa will do the same this weekend.
The Americans have a large variety of persons to choose from. They can do this choice on the basis of the characteristics and policy shown by the presidential candidates in the cause of their various election campaigns.
In South Africa it works a bit different. We do not know how many candidates we have. Except for two of them, we do not know who they are. In regard to the two candidates we know there is not much of a choice. The one is the sitting (or is it travelling?) president. He makes George W Bush look good! In terms of the constitution he can not be re-elected as president. So, why his name is up, nobody knows…
The other is Mr Zuma who may be elected but faces serious corruption charges which might lead to a situation where he’ll have to govern the country for the whole of his tenure from behind bars. What counts in his favour is that he will not be able to travel so much abroad as his predesessor! He will have also have direct contact with convicted criminals which should enable him to have a better grasp on reality as far as crime in South Africa is concerned.
That is South Africans’ choice. Is there any way in which we and the Americans can swop candidates. We will throw in a police commissioner, a minister of health and a few others on the deal?!
Do you now understand why our anthem is Nkosi zikelele Africa (God be with Africa)!
